As a parent, I want to be involved in my children's lives so that I can help them feel supported and also, so that I know what is going on.  Education is something that many parents leave up to the schools and often times learning differences and social problems go undetected because children slip through the cracks or parents are not aware of the issues.  My husband and I have tossed around the idea of home schooling, but I know my limitations and one of them is that being school teacher to my kids would not be good for any of us!

So, as someone who wants to be involved in the education of my children, I volunteer at their school, stay in contact with the teachers and parents of my daughters' friends and I also look for resources and activities that can enrich my girls' knowledge base.  One resource I have found to be particularly useful is the Scholastic website at www.scholastic.com.  Often times their teachers use this website for homework assignments.  There are many great places on the internet to explore with your children and also to help educate parents about educating their kids.  Here are some resources that I have found to be particularly useful:

In the new year, make it a priority to take a bigger step into your child's education.  Look for 5 minute a day exercises that will show your child that you are interested in them while also giving you a feeling that you are helping your child to learn.  Commit to these exercises at least every other day, if not every day.  This can not only help strengthen your bond with your child, but will help your child to come to you if they are struggling with something at school like learning issues.  The more involved parents are with their kids, the happier everyone will be.  Happy new year!
