More Lead in Toys! Go Here! PDF Print E-mail

Another report came out today by the Michigan-based Ecology Center along with the National Center for Health, Environment and Justice exposing the fact that 35% of toys on the shelves of major toy stores contain lead and other hazardous substances.  Lead can cause irreversible developmental damage, coma and death, so it is not to be taken lightly.

Some of the toys in particular that contained lead levels 5 times the legal limit are ones that my kids would be interested in... the Hannah Montana Card game case and a Go Diego Go! backpack.  It seems that news continues to pour in about hazardous chemicals in products that our children use often, so it is important for caregivers to stay informed.  Responsible Family Blog will post a notice every time something related is in the news to keep you on top of the action.  But you can also do a few things to increase your child's toy safety...

What can parents do to keep their kids safe from lead and chemical exposure?  Go here   You will be visiting Healthy Toys, an organization that was developed by the Ecology Center and the Washington Toxics Coalition.  When you are finished learning about the toxins in toys, how they affect kids and whether your child's toys are listed, go here and here and here to shop for holiday gifts ! If you would like to receive email alerts when there are new toy recalls, sign up here .  Avoid giving your child metal jewelry which has been found to contain high levels of lead.  If you are concerned about plastics , purchase non-painted wood toys, fabric teethers and plush toys.

When a child opens gifts, don't forget to discard all packaging once toy is opened, read use instructions and warnings, follow age and developmental ability guidelines and before giving any toy to your child, double check that there are no loose parts, broken pieces, or sharp edges.
