Alright folks, another earthquake struck Southern California on July 29, 2008.  The photo above shows damage from Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 and this is the block that I live on now!  Earthquakes can cause damage and injuries within moments.  This is why strapping furniture and large objects like TVs to walls is essential.

It was only a 5.4 this time, but here in San Francisco the experts predict a quake over 7.0 within the next decade.  Since we can't prevent or predict earthquakes, the best thing to do is to prepare for them.  So, let's run through some tips...

What is the best way to be prepared for when a major shaker strikes?

  1. Prepare your family's disaster emergency plan .  (Know where schools evacuate to, your office's evacuation procedure, who to contact out of area to give your status and location to, where you will meet up with your family).
  2. Decide where your family will reunite after the disaster and write it down on the back of your business card along with key emergency contacts and phone numbers.  Place copies of the card in your wallet, your car and your children's backpacks.
  3. Prepare a disaster kit including food, water, cash, blankets, medications and copies of important documents.
  4. Pick an out of state contact and send them copies of your important documents (driver's licenses, passports, bank statements, insurance, medical records, etc).
  5. Find out where your local FEMA office is and who you should contact in a disaster.
  6. Take a CPR class.
