Another lovely reminder to parents to think twice about buying toys manufactured in China... An independent study was conducted by the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization, an organization of asbestos victims and their families. The findings were quite alarming. The products that contained from 5% to 30% asbestos were a toy called the CSI Fingerprint Examination Kit, two brands of children's play clay, powdered cleanser, roof sealers, duct tapes, window glazing, spackling paste and small appliances. The CSI Fingerprint Kit is the most disturbing result because two of the three fingerprinting powders contained high levels of two types of asbestos. These powders are designed to be applied to fingerprints and then dusted off, which means the asbestos particles can be easily ingested by children during this process. Another disconcerting fact that was revealed in this study about US product safety standards is that there is no mandatory testing for asbestos in any products. Health officials insist that any amount of asbestos can be hazardous to humans, but US regulations state that products may contain up to 1%... not good any way you look at it. The moral of the story here is that parents, grandparents and any adults giving children holiday gifts this year need to be hypervigilant about CPSC product recalls and to look for toys made in the USA, Europe or Canada, as these countries have stronger regulations for these types of products. And if you want to really be sure of every ingredient in toys that your child receives, make them yourself ! Happy holidays!
