It is something that all parents can relate to, the fear of leaving
their child with a caregiver. How can you protect your child when you
can’t always be present? Parents rely on babysitters, grandparents,
teachers, nannies or other caregivers to watch their children while
they tend to other responsibilities. Unfortunately, not all caregivers
are suitable or sufficiently educated about the dangers that children
face and how to adequately react in an emergency situation.
Fortunately, two companies based on opposite coasts of the U,S, have
joined forces to open the lines of communication between parents and
caregivers and educate them on child safety.
“Shockingly,
the number one cause of child death in the United States is not
childhood cancer, diabetes or influenza. In fact, if you add all
childhood illnesses together, you still would not equal the number of
children who die of preventable injuries” explains Britt Michaelian,
mother of three and CEO of Responsible Family Company. “This statistic
is the reason that parents and caregivers must be ready to handle any
situation that might confront them.”
In addition to preparing
caregivers for emergencies, communication between parents and
caregivers is essential to bridge the gap between assumptions and
reality. Jill Starishevsky, a prosecutor of child abuse and sex crimes
in New York City and founder of HowsMyNanny.com said, “Parents must
have continuous feedback to be certain that their children are being
adequately cared for by their caregivers. It is with this in mind that
HowsMyNanny.com was created.”
Established in October 2006,
HowsMyNanny.com provides a mini license plate to attach to a child’s
stroller so that a passerby who observes the nanny’s conduct (good or
bad) can send an email to the parent’s personal account. In addition to
being the first organization to facilitate communication between parent
and caregiver through the use of a license plate affixed to the child’s
stroller, HowsMyNanny.com is educating parents on how to effectively
screen and interview nannies.
Responsible Family Company, a
San Francisco based business founded in 2007 is reaching families
through DVDs, safety courses and other media designed to empower and
educate caregivers about the best practices in keeping children safe.
Developed with an emergency room physician, Care for Kids: The
Essential Guide to Preparing Caregivers is an award winning DVD
covering the most common medical emergencies and how to handle them.
This program is currently available on Amazon.com for $19.99.
When
the founders of these companies learned about each other, they realized
the natural synergy between their businesses and the possibilities that
come with working together in a holistic approach to educate caregivers
about safety. Both HowsMyNanny.com and Responsible Family have been
created with the express purpose of empowering parents and caregivers
with safety, communication and positive caregiver techniques. Both
organizations also have a similar message: it is imperative to be
proactive when it comes to the safety of our children.
This
weekend, HowsMyNanny.com and Responsible Family will be sponsoring Baby
Celebration LA, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Jill Starishevsky
has organized The Safety Panel at this event, which is comprised of
leading experts in the varied fields of childhood safety. They are
highly experienced and well informed professionals who have spent many
years assisting parents with valuable techniques such as nanny
selection, Safe Smarts, car seat installation, school bus safety,
school lunch safety and so much more.
In addition to providing
tips on how to effectively interview a nanny, Ms. Starishevsky will be
reading the children’s book she wrote called “My Body”. The book is
designed to teach children about the difference between “good touch”
and “bad touch” and provide parents with a valuable tool to discuss
child sexual abuse prevention. Though the book is not due out until
June, interested parents can provide their addresses and sign up on a
waiting list by going to

Continuing the
synergistic relationship, Ms. Michaelian will be emceeing the safety
panel on Saturday while donating educational DVDs and Responsible
Family child safety magnets.
Both of these child advocates
look forward to sharing their knowledge and expertise directly with
mothers and caregivers in the Los Angeles area and this is just the
beginning. In the second half of April, Britt is sponsoring the Week of
the Young Child in San Francisco and in May, she will be leading two
workshops on emergency preparedness for nannies at the International
Nanny Association conference in Orlando. These two companies are
working together to reach a larger market with their message.
Michaelian says, “We are always looking for ways to partner up and work
together to educate parents and caregivers about the importance of
safety from coast to coast. If we can make a positive difference in the
field of family safety, this is well worth the time. Just as with
motherhood, our job will never be done!”

THE OFFICIAL TOYMAN REVIEW
Introducing Care for Kids: The Essential Guide to Preparing Caregivers
More children die every year from preventable injuries than from all childhood illnesses combined. That is a scary fact for parents and caregivers! But, there is a solution for you! Care for Kids: The Essential Guide to Preparing Caregivers, is a DVD tutorial/information source designed to educate caregivers about common emergencies while showing them the tools they need to help children avoid preventable injuries and react accordingly when accidents do happen.
A Mother Generally Knows Best
Care for Kids: was created by a mother who worked in the pediatric unit of a prominent San Francisco hospital and saw first hand what can happen when caregivers are not educated about common emergencies. By using the insightful supervision of Dr. Wayne Warrington, an emergency department physician, to ensure accuracy and authenticity in the development of this product, a reliable and accurate tool is now available for caregivers.
Care for Kids: The Essential Guide to Preparing Caregivers is quite simple and easy to understand with a short 35 minutes span to help educate you to be prepared and in full understanding of what to do in case of a medical emergency. Also included are valuable tips from an experienced mother with a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy about car seat safety, common sense, emotional well being and constant supervision techniques.
A Common Concern
It is a common concern for all caregivers to be up to par on their knowledge of proper procedures for care giving. A prominent issue all the same is the burden or what is referred to as "burnout" out for a caregiver. It is a serious effort for a caregiver. Quite often the caregiver is a loved one of a patient or close friend attending to the needs of a patient.
Results of a 2006 study by the Carers National Association indicated that one of every two caregivers had financial burdens and that two of every three were in ill health themselves (2). Other studies show that (1) a large majority of caregivers have experienced fatigue, frustration, and stress as a result of caregiving, (2) two thirds believe that caregiving has put a strain on their marriage, and (3) one fourth have felt despair as a result of the caregiving experience (2).
When you take the results of these surveys and consider the potential threat that they imply, it is clear to see all the more that the importance of having a full understanding of caregiving is absolutely vital. Without it, the probability of "burnout" is raised greatly and can be an almost sure bet it will occur. Care for Kids: The Essential Guide to Preparing Caregivers delivers the information needed to help deal with this concern and at a more affordable price.
Real-Life Experience
Care for Kids: The Essential Guide to Preparing Caregivers proved to be an interesting item in our consumer evaluation portion of our review. The testing was completed in three different locations;
- A home in Las Vegas, NV where a man was a stroke victim being cared for by his wife.
- A home in San Antomino, TX where a woman had a pulmonary issue and was under her sister's care.
- A home in Brooklyn, NY where a pastor of church was taking care of his wife after a serious car accident.
Under the circumstances, it was obviously a challenge to try and do our evaluation in a short period of time but we have to do our best to provide an accurate review within 30-45 days on the average for some products and services. This study was carefully put together, and we were able to find excellent real-life situations with the help of a local physician who put us in contact with these people to conduct our study and testing.
The end result with the completion of our testing was quite good. All three caregivers expressed consistent opinions of having learned much from using Care for Kids: The Essential Guide to Preparing Caregivers. The caregivers in Brooklyn and San Antonio both expressed an avid interest in learning more from additional sources. When queried what they felt prompted them to desire to learn more, they both made it quite clear that it was influenced by the usage of Care for Kids: The Essential Guide to Preparing Caregivers.
The Individual Ratings For This Product
While other organizations will define their ratings in a "blanket" method which simply defines each rating in an overall usage, we choose to take a different approach. Each individual rating that was assigned to this a product, based upon our evaluation process, is briefly explained as to how that specific rating score was reached. The ratings for this product are listed below.
CONTENT QUALITY: Rating Level 4 - The content quality of Care for Kids: The Essential Guide to Preparing Caregivers was well above average. The lessons and examples were simple, real-life, and easy to understand. The approach used has a strong influence in causing caregivers to desire to learn more from additional sources. It makes the labors of caregiving more fully understood. As stated before, Care for Kids: The Essential Guide to Preparing Caregivers is well above average in its scoring for this category yet it falls short of a perfect score by a single digit.
EDUCATIONAL VALUE: Rating Level 5 - The educational value is incredible with this product. It is very well structured with a logical flow for maximum educational potential for caregivers who are fully experienced as well as those who are new to this work. This demonstrates the true value of the educational value of this product.
MARKETING VALUE: Rating Level 4 - The marketing value with Care for Kids: The Essential Guide to Preparing Caregivers is well above average, yet it is lacking a small bit due to the image conveyed in DVD packaging. The product delivers a well thought out and educational tool but many buyers base their buying habits first by the visual appeal, not thinking of the actual content level combined with the packaging for an overall sense of value. Care for Kids: The Essential Guide to Preparing Caregivers falls short of a perfect score by a single point.
READING RESPONSE: Rating Level 5 - In the case of the DVD in regard to READING response, when you see a DVD, you being hit visually and audibly so in this case a reading response is meant as how a person takes the information in; to what degree do they absorb what they are seeing/hearing and applying it? In this category, Care for Kids: The Essential Guide to Preparing Caregivers scored a full score of "5".
SKILL IMPROVEMENT: Rating Level 5 - Skill Improvement is one of the primary fringe benefits of using Care for Kids: The Essential Guide to Preparing Caregivers. The logically structured program assures a steady flow of interest and participation by the caregiver. The end result of that equates to skill level improvement at the highest level. This program is an excellent application for both home and professional environment.
VISUAL APPEAL: Rating Level 4 - When it comes to visual appeal, Care for Kids: The Essential Guide to Preparing Caregivers was great in regard to the DVD presentation, somewhat similar to a PowerPoint presentation, but more interesting of course. As for the packaging, the visual appeal was average which caused a single digit deduction for a score of "4" in this category.
