As we all know, halloween is about tricks and treats, but it is also a time of candy, costumes, pumpkins and the hazards that come with these fun items.

On October 10, catch me on The View from the Bay discussing what parents need to know to keep toddlers to teens safe this halloween season. Here are just a few of my tips:

  1. Make sure your child's costume is fire-proof, reflective and fits properly.
  2. Light pumpkins with glow sticks or battery powered lights rather than candles that can potentially cause a fire.
  3. If your child carries props, discourage the use of sharp or pointed objects.
  4. Instead of carving a pumpkin, try another fun option like painting or decorating it.
  5. Review street safety and stranger rules with kids before leaving home.
  6. Plan a route and give all children a map of your neighborhood with your route clearly designated.
  7. Place a name tag with your name and cel phone number on the back of toddlers and young children who could potentially get separated in a crowd.
  8. Drive teens to their destinations on halloween.  For teens who are learning to drive or who may be distracted by friends in the car, the hazards are numerous and teens are safer being a passenger on halloween.

For more halloween safety information, tune in to the show at 3pm if you are in the Bay Area or watch it on the View from the Bay website any time afterwards.  For additional child safety information, order my book Secrets of the Safety Goddess: A Modern Safety Guide for Busy Parents on amazon.com

Have a safe and very happy halloween!
