Today I was a very proud mommy. When your children do things to help others, it really warms your heart. There is no better way to describe it. My oldest daughter has always had very long beautiful hair. Lately, it was getting in a lot of tangles and she was not thrilled to have her hair brushed (and forget about brushing it herself). Every morning, it was a chore to get her hair into a ponytail. Every evening, it was a battle to get the knots out after she washed it. So, today, we tied it up into a ponytail and walked up to the hair salon. They cut off a 10 inch ponytail and we sealed it into a plastic bag. My daughter now has a very cute bob and we are sending her beautiful ponytail off to be made into a wig for a child with cancer (or other illness) at Locks of Love . This is a wonderful organization that takes hair donations to make wigs for disadvantaged children suffering from hair loss due to medical ailments. Locks of Love has very specific instructions for donating the hair, so make sure to check the website . They do not take hair that has been bleached or highlighted, but they can take hair that has been colored. The hair has to be clean, dry and cut above the rubber band of the ponytail (so it all stays together) and you cannot use scraps from the ground. Once the hair is cut, place the ponytail in a plastic bag, then into a mailing envelope with their donation form and mail it!
If you or your child have very long hair (or can grow it) and would like to do something nice for others, this is a great way to make you feel good and to get out of those many hours of detangling and tears! It's a win - win all around! There are other organizations that accept donations for patients who need wigs as well. Some of them only require 8 inches of hair while others need more . We chose Locks of Love because someone else we know donated to them and we were familiar with their organization. I saw Hilary Swank on Oprah, cutting her hair for the Pantene Beautiful Lengths campaign which was very generous (imagine sporting Hilary Sawnks hair in yur wig)! But, whatever organization you choose, it is for a good cause and you or your child will never regret the decision to go short, especially when you think of the child who will be so happy to have your hair!
