Music is a wonderful gift that many people don't realize is there for the taking. It can help lift your spirits when you are down. It can raise your energy level. It can get children to dance and be happy when they are cranky. Hello... did you hear me ? Music can help your kids to be happy too! Music is wonderful! The key is knowing what music your kids like, and what inspires them. I have found that my kids like classical music like Mozart and Beethoven when they are in a quiet mood. I don't know if it has made them any smarter, but classical music sure does make them slow down. When they are crabby or hyper, they like fast songs that make them move. It is great to put on different styles of music and see your child's mood transform. It might not work every time, but once they get used to hearing their favorite songs and having "dance parties", they will start to recognize music as a form of expression. I have learned to use music as a useful tool with my kids and I hope you will too. Personally, I like all kinds of music, except (sorry to all of you country fans) I just can't stand country music. Everyone is different though, and it is amazing how my children really do appreciate so many different kinds of music. One of my daughters is a rocker, one is more of a bohemian and the other is just a music nut. We like to experiement with international music from India, Spain, South America, Africa and Asia. Learning about music can make learning about geography fun too! There is a lot of popular music out there right now that is entertaining for both kids and parents, like Hannah Montana and High School Musical, but the classics and alternative music styles work too. Just make sure to watch the language if that is important to you. To find the music that your children will respond to, try a variety of musical styles. Mix it up! iTunes is great for exploring new types of music and sampling new artists! And don't forget to look for live music events to let your children experience music in person. It is culturally enriching and helps them to get out some of their energy, not to mention it is cool!
